Graphic memoir3/31/2023 ![]() They have also achieved something comparable to the complexity and density that can be achieved in a novel while transcending the novel format’s limitations with artwork that is an integral part of the medium rather than merely being illustrative of the plot. These comics, along with a host of other artful and literate publications, have gained recognition and awards well beyond the sometimes insular world of comic fandom. Vaughan, with artwork by Pia Guerra and Niko Henrichon, respectively. Indeed, the production of comics in book form and the subsequent exploitation of the freedoms associated with the book market saw the emergence of a wealth of material, such as Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth (2000) by Chris Ware, Persepolis (2000) by Marjane Satrapi, From Hell (1991–98) and Lost Girls (1991–2006) by Alan Moore, with artwork by Eddie Campbell and Melinda Gebbie, respectively, and Y: The Last Man (2002–08) and Pride of Baghdad (2006) by Brian K. The turn of the 21st century proved to be a golden period for comics and graphic novels. From its inception, it may be argued, the term graphic novel has served less to elevate the medium of comics than to denigrate it further by enforcing a hierarchy based on format alone rather than one based on substance, form, or quality. It was the assumption that comics were merely for children that created the confusion. In fact, all three of these books had originally appeared as serial publications in comic or magazine form. Indeed, it was the mainstream media that gave the term graphic novel such currency, with press attention focusing on the notion that these books were materially different from the comics that children read. Other than the format and the media hype that grew up around them, there was very little that was new about these books. Crumb and the underground comix of the 1960s. These factors alone made these books seem like something new and distinct from mainstream comics, but it is important to note that The Dark Knight Returns (which imagined an aging Batman emerging from retirement) and Watchmen (a Cold War-era commentary on the archetypal “super team”) were firmly situated in the superhero genre and that Spiegelman’s work was deeply indebted to R. Cube world pet food wiki3/31/2023 ![]() After six long years since its alpha release back in 2013, Cube World is finally available as a. Since they're not on any current list, I've started a new one to keep track of them until the wiki is updated. A guide for how to tame and ride pets in the recently released Cube World on Steam. As I've been playing, I've stumbled across food items that weren't yet discovered by the streamers pre-release. You just need to make the analyze feature expensive enough to discourage using it unless you really want to complete your logs at all costs, which in turn will encourage the player to go and talk to NPCs to avoid paying that fee and hoping to get some other informations (rumors, quests, etc). ago Posted by Igivekarmatomen Spoilerish Spreadsheet of pets and their foods. In fact, I thought that both the analyze feature AND the "keep track of what you heard of" features would blend well together. ![]() I'm glad people came up with more interesting useful idea's.Īny variation of idea's would be nice, the thing I really want is just to not feel the need to leave my game to open google (breaking immersion) and not having to click on 10+ food items to hold it out tediously in hopes that the animal would like it. Honestly, I think I like the latter a lot more, especially if the NPC's talk about these food items more often. Makes talking to NPC's even more valuable. Or being able to save the knowledge you've learned from NPC's is a brilliant idea. Originally posted by Gamer Raichu:I like these suggestions! Being able to analyze it is another feature that could make towns even MORE useful. But clicking each individual food item to offer to the animal is just tedious, no need to slow down our fun gameplay when we could just read it in game! It just sorta brings me out of the gameplay experience. ![]() The reason why I suggest this is because I reeeaally don't want to have any reason to use google for a game. If it doesn't get put in, we can obviously live, but I feel like it'd just be a tiny quality of life change that might not be too difficult to implement. Let's not turn this feature into a wiki-guidebook lookup exercise, just list the information in the game for easy access! We have the big ole box that pops up when we hover over the food, it'd be perfect to just list the animal it's intended for. Yes, NPC's do mention what food certain animals like, but that's a rare dialogue box that I almost always forget about. I bet the majority of us are just going to use google to identify what foods feed which animals, so there's no real point in keeping it a secret. Just a friendly suggestion! I've got like, ten+ pet foods, it's not really enjoyable to go through the tedium of bringing each individual food out for the animal that I happened to run into.

Who plays battman3/31/2023 ![]() Even when the script lacked the oomph of The Animated Series, Conroy proved just how much he knew Batman to his core, even without having to wear a cape. Kevin Conroy only played Batman once in live-action, in a scene-stealing guest role in the TV special Crisis on Infinite Earths. But these are only memorable because of Conroy’s gravitational performance, fostering a symbiotic relationship that feeds into the legend. I had a bad day too, once.” This profound writing is only outshined by the show’s arresting art deco style that, maybe more than Tim Burton’s theatrical films, best visualized the platonic ideal of Batman. At the end of the episode, Harley asks Batman why he even bothered “for someone who’s never given you anything but trouble?” Conroy’s Batman simply replies, “I know what it’s like to rebuild a life. In one memorable episode, Batman takes it easy on the mischievous Harley Quinn, who spends the episode trying and failing to redeem herself. Batman: The Animated Series is rightfully remembered as one of the most celebrated superhero shows of all time, with its humanistic storytelling that was as exciting and thrilling as it was funny, tragic, and heartbreaking. It helped that the material gave Conroy the canvas he needed to create art. “I thought dramatically it would just give the story more color,” Conroy said in a 2009 interview, “make it more interesting if there was an auditory difference that would make sense why people don’t recognize him when he’s in this mask and this cowl who know him as Bruce Wayne.” While Batman film star Michael Keaton applied a similar method in live-action, Conroy was the first to apply this to animation. Warner Bros.Ĭonroy knew to use two different voices when playing Batman and his public alter ego, Bruce Wayne. Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman in various media, has died.

Tales from the borderlands masks3/31/2023 ![]() ![]() From what I recall, what really prompted Anzaldua was from seeing “tex-mex” and “chicano” literature. The first step of resistance would be to escape what authors described as psychic or psychological alienation. They wrote how individuals have first, take a psychological step of self-acceptance prior to the collective social step of anglo-suspicion. To answer your question, how I understood resistance in these two pieces was how for both authors, resistance is achieved in steps. ![]() How colored bodies and accented tongues could escape an imposed foreign judgment of “inferiority” by “bleaching” or ridding oneself of an accent or blackness. This idea that “bleaching” was a possible solvent to racism. Hi Rachel, I also found it interesting how Fanon and Anzaldua began their pieces describing how there was a strong sense that assimilation was a necessary or worse, destined, path for ascendency or admittance into anglo-male dominated culture. What do you think of these two uses of the word bleach in these two texts? How do you see understandings of assimilation and resistance in the two pieces? Together, these two texts and these two uses of the word bleach show the psychology of the different paths non-white people have within a white-dominated society. Anzaldua continues to express resistance to assimilation when she says “I seek an exoneration, a seeing through the fictions of white supremacy, a seeing of ourselves in our true guises and not as the false racial personality that has been given to us and that we have given to ourselves.” In Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza Gloria Anzaldua writes “We count the days the weeks the year the centuries the eons until the white laws and commerce and customs will rot in the deserts they’ve created, lie bleached… yet we, the mestizas will remain.” Anzaldua uses the term bleached to empower mestiza identity and show that a white, bleached identity leads nowhere and to an ultimate end. Through this example, Fanon shows how cultural assimilation is racist because colonial subjects needed to forfeit their own culture to take on a colonial identity. Bleach is used to remove identity to fit it. In Black Skin, White Masks Fanon describes Mayotte who loves a white man and sees her as demanding nothing “except a bit of whiteness in her life.” Fanon continues to say “since she could no longer try to blacken, to negrify the world, she was going to try, in her own body and in her own mind, to bleach it.” He describes her motives as whiteness at any price to win admittance to the white world. What struck me in both readings was the use of the word bleach. Written more than thirty years apart, Black Skin, White Masks and Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza both wrestle with what is means to be opposite to white society through the lens of a black man and a queer Latinx woman.

Texas school districts budget calendar3/31/2023 ![]() The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA), passed in December 2020, had another $5.53 billion for Texas schools in the ESSER II Fund. These funds were largely used to finance a “hold harmless” for school districts, ensuring that school districts were fully funded based on initial state appropriations estimates from 2019 despite significant declines in student enrollment in 2020. The CARES Act, passed in March 2020, had $1.29 billion for Texas in the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER I).Texas has received three tranches of federal stimulus funding for education: But the biggest reason may be an unexpected one: Texas spent so much new money on education in House Bill 3 – a much-needed investment that Legislators remain rightly proud of – that the federal spending equations risk producing some unintended outcomes. ![]() Rather, a series of legal, financial, and historical barriers have placed Texas in a unique position, unable to deploy these funds without additional federal blessings. So why isn’t the money moving? As with most bureaucratic and budgetary questions, there’s no one simple answer. With learning loss concerns shared across the political spectrum, swift deployment of financial resources for additional learning time, improved curriculum, and teacher training is vital. And only 12% of Texas 5th graders achieved “meets grade level” in science. Only 15% of Texas 4th graders achieved “meets grade level” in math. Earlier this year, the Texas Education Agency reported that optional beginning-of-year assessments found that only 29% of Texas 3rd graders achieved “meets grade level” in reading. As school districts try to plan for additional learning time over the summer to help these kids catch up, they’re keenly aware that efficient use of funding takes time – time for planning, hiring, and curriculum development – while throwing together programs at the last minute can often be more costly and less effective for students.Īnd these efforts are essential. They’re not wrong: the pandemic has had a disproportionately negative impact on many low-income Texas students, and the smart use of federal resources will be arguably the most important tool for helping these young Texans catch up and achieve their full academic potential. Across the state’s op-ed pages, education leaders and advocates have expressed significant frustration with the fact that the state has not released $18 billion in federal stimulus dollars to school districts.

Down in bermuda forest island relics3/31/2023 ![]() It’s not terrible, but it stops the combat mechanics from being as great as they should be. The game just raises enemy hit points, lowers yours, or throws a greater number of enemies at you. This also means that the difficulty scaling is simplistic. The AI is fairly mindless, charging in for melee or hiding behind cover and popping up at predictable intervals. ![]() Sadly, for everything done right in the controls, there’s something done wrong in the AI. ![]() All movement felt fluid and natural and I enjoyed jumping and climbing around the environment without yelling at my PS3. I’m delighted to say that there was no problem here. I had visions of Lara jumping up and down against a wall because I wasn’t standing at exactly the right place. ![]() The franchise developed its movement system in the early Playstation games and improved very little over the years. This was, by far, my least favorite part of previous tomb raider games. In particular, I felt like the Shanty town forced the gameplay into a linear set of shooting galleries in a region that could have been very open. There were a few boards, however, that were very linear. Many of the environments were open enough to let you tackle problems in whatever way you saw fit, funneling enemies through choke points or slowly moving around the area for stealth kills. The visuals are beautiful, on par with any other adventure game and the sounds are robust enough to be immersive. Some people didn’t like the lack of tombs, but I enjoyed the variety of environments ranging from the beach to shanty towns to ancient palaces. The different areas also offer a wide variety of terrain ranging from forest to military bunkers to ancient Japanese temples. It’s big enough that the fast-travel mechanic is absolutely necessary, but it is not ungainly. I was pleasantly surprised though at the size of it. This game keeps you locked onto an island and at first I thought that would be limiting because I’m used to much bigger games like the Uncharted series. The developers did put forth effort to add some back-story to the characters, but they all felt pretty stereotypical and their primary purpose was definitely to be plot devices for Lara’s story. Unfortunately, as much as I got pulled into Lara’s story, other characters were very two-dimensional. I recall a point where I caught myself shooting cultists through the head with a bow and arrow while they are just trying to pull their friends out of burning buildings and I thought “Oh man, when did I get so angry at these guys?!” I found myself transitioning from desperately trying to survive to vengeful fury right along with the character. Lara’s character is well-developed and the player is drawn into her development. The story is engaging and keeps you moving from place to place without feeling like you’re on a track. Nothing makes you grow up like stabbing someone with a climbing axe. As the plot progresses, we find that you are definitely not the first crew stranded and many of the island’s occupants have formed a cult around the supernatural events on the island that conspire to keep people from leaving. In a freak storm, your ship crashes and the whole crew is stranded. We start with Lara as part of an archaeological expedition sailing into the Dragon’s Triangle (read “Bermuda Triangle”). Rather than reboot the series, this game seems to simply be a prequel that shows us how Lara came to be the tomb-raiding bad-ass she is in other games. On the other hand, if you’d like a game with solid mechanics that effectively tells a compelling back story for the Lara Croft we’ve all grown to love, read on.Īs I said, the purpose of this game is to delve into Lara’s back story. If staying in underground tombs, backflips off of ledges, and poor combat mechanics are vital requirements for you, you can stop reading now – you will not like this game. This game was clearly not made to fit the same mold as its predecessors. I’ve read a number of other reviews online about Tomb Raider and I feel that it’s necessary to get something out of the way before a good review can be made. Crystal Dynamics has done an elegant job of connecting us to Lara Croft in a origin story told through beautiful environments, moving character performances, and top-notch game mechanics. |
